Lesson #18 - The Mirror Effect

This is one of my favorite effects.  We will be making a Mirror Signature in this tutorial.  Start by opening a new raster image 500 X 200 white background for this exercise, you can apply this to any background you like in the future.

Now in a favorite color using your text tool find a nice script font that you like and type in your name or screenname.  You should now have a white background with your text centered in the page.
Too much background? Use the crop tool to cut down the amount of background.  Here is mine:

now we are going to copy this image so that you will have two images exactly alike, shift D will give you an exact copy of your original image.  On our second image, we are going to
Flip it, on our main menu go to Image/Flip or click on Control+I.  This gives us a mirror image of our text.
next we want to skew the mirror image to appear to be slightly off center. Go to Effects / Geometric Effects / Skew and change your settings as below:

Skew direction = Horizontal, Skew Angle = -32, Edge Mode = Color (set to white).
Click OK and it now should look similar to this.

Let's make it look like a real shadow.  First add a new layer.  Go to Layers/New Raster Layer and click ok in the new box.  With the Flood Fill Tool change your foreground color to white and fill our new layer.  It should now look completely white, all the text is gone.  On the Layer palette See where you Raster 1 is located and the slide button next to eye icon. The Slide in PSP XI is located at the top of the Layer Palette
Slide your button down to about 50% and our image will look as below:
With that done we want to merge our layers.  Go to Layers/Merge/ Merge All.  This puts everything onto one layer. We also need to crop around the text as closely as possible without cutting into the text. Going back to our original text we need to make room for the shadow text.  Click on Image/Add Border when the window comes up you need to set it as below:

Making sure the symmetric box is unchecked add more to the bottom of the image, here I added 122 pixels, and make sure the color is white like our background.  Click OK.

Your image should now look similar to this:

Now Copy the Shadowed text and paste into this image as below.

crop as needed and save and you have your beautiful mirrored text.  Don't you just love it!  Here are a couple of more examples.

Have fun!
