Making Mosaic Tiled Backgrounds

Open a new image 300 x 300 pixels, white background.  Choose at least 3 colors or more and with your square brush tool create some color areas on the background.

Like this, you can't make a mistake here just have fun.  Now using our filters we are going to combine these colors a little.  Go to EFFECTS/Distortion Effects/Curlicues and click on OK.  your picture should look something like this.

Don't worry if it doesn't look exactly like mine all we are doing is mixing up the colors a little.  Next go to EFFECTS/Distortion Effects/Wave then click OK.  Now our image will look similar to this.

See how all the colors are mixing together?  Next go to EFFECTS/Distortion Effects/Wind then click ok.  This will blur the colors together even more.

Now that we have a nice mix of colors the last step is to make them into tiles.  Go to EFFECTS/Texture Effects/Mosaic - Antique and make your settings look like these:

Click ok and you have a tiled background.

Play around with different colors, if you want to make the colors more subtle, use the lighter color range in the palette.  Remember the more open spaces between colors the more white in the final effect. I use these backgrounds to display my tubes, I love them.
