Drop shadows are used to make the text or graphic jump off the page in a 3D effect.  Here are some examples:

 

 here you see the same graphic the first is just the regular bird and the second has a drop shadow.

See how the bird seems to jump off the page?

 

Again the same principal, the text in the top example is plain text but in the bottom it has a drop shadow on it.

 

You can make this effect on your graphics by highlighting the graphic you want to emphasize and click on Effects/3D Effects/Drop Shadow  you may want to play around with the settings to get the desired effects I used these settings but work with them see what they can do.  Remember you can always "UNDO"  Edit/Undo  (CTRL Z).
